Ink and Verdict

Strategy

White-black "Repartee" midrange: almost every noncreature spell in the deck targets a creature, and the deck is packed with payoffs that trigger when that happens. Cast Last Gasp on their attacker and suddenly Melancholic Poet drains, Inkling Mascot flies in, Rehearsed Debater grows, Graduation Day adds a counter, and Informed Inkwright makes a flying token — one removal spell becomes four triggers. You win through incremental drain, evasive Inkling tokens, and clean two-for-one exchanges, backed by one of the best removal suites the pool can offer.

Roles

• Threat: Melancholic Poet (the core engine — up to 4 copies draining with every targeted spell), Sneering Shadewriter (flying 4-drop that drains 2 on entry), Eager Glyphmage and Informed Inkwright building a flying Inkling board, Silverquill, the Disputant copying your removal via casualty.
• Removal: Harsh Annotation, Last Gasp, Hero's Downfall, Mortify, Silverquill Charm, and Dissection Practice — nine hard or soft removal spells, all of which trigger your Repartee payoffs while answering threats.
• Card draw / selection: Rapier Wit taps a blocker AND draws a card while triggering everything; Imperious Inkmage surveils 2 on entry and Inkling Mascot surveils repeatedly, keeping draws smooth.
• Protection / defense: Imperious Inkmage (vigilant 7 copies-deep wall of a 2-drop), constant lifegain from Melancholic Poet and Dissection Practice, and Conciliator's Duelist blinking your own creature to dodge removal or re-trigger an enter effect.
• Lands: 22 total with 4 Forum of Amity duals (plus late-game surveil sink), 9 Plains, 9 Swamp — an easy two-color manabase for a deck whose curve tops at four.

Synergies & curve

The engine compounds: Dissection Practice for one mana can target two creatures, drain, and set off every Repartee trigger you control — with two Poets out, a single {B} spell swings life totals by 3+ each way. Rapier Wit is the perfect glue card: tempo, a card, and triggers all in one. Silverquill, the Disputant turns any Inkling token into a copied removal spell, and Stirring Hopesinger converts a targeted trick into a team-wide anthem. The curve is aggressively flat — 4 one-mana spells, 14 two-drops, a handful of threes, and only 3 four-drops — so you develop and interact in the same turn from turn three onward, while surveil from Inkmage and Mascot keeps you hitting land drops and finding action.

Turn 4: cast Dissection Practice targeting their blocker (-1/-1) and your attacker (+1/+1) — two Melancholic Poets drain 2, Inkling Mascot gains flying and surveils, Graduation Day puts a counter on your attacker, and you swing for a lethal-setting 8 in the air.

Weak spots

The engine needs creatures on both sides: against creature-light control decks half your removal and all your Repartee triggers lose value, leaving you leaning on raw Inkling beats. There are no counterspells and no board wipe, so a resolved bomb or a wider aggro board must be answered one card at a time. Artifact/enchantment interaction is a single Mortify, and the deck has no reach outside combat — if the ground and air get bricked, drains from Melancholic Poet are your only slow path to victory.
